What Are Executive Function Skills?
Often, when we think of problems with executive functioning, we think of disorganization. However, organization is only one of these important skills.  The term Executive Function refers to eight, interrelated processes that combine to act as the brain's “command & control” center:

  • Impulse Control

  • Emotional Control

  • Flexible Thinking

  • Working Memory

  • Self-monitoring

  • Prioritization

  • Task Initiation

  • Organization

Although “Executive Dysfunction” is common buzzterm in American schools and psychologist offices, there is nothing dysfunctional about lacking these skills.  The inability to adapt to the cognitive demands of Western culture is NOT a deficit, rather it is a symbol of our creative imagination needing to balance.
